Woolf Consultancy is providing project and programme management support for Veolia Environmental Services on their new £670m waste management contract with the London Borough of Southwark. Waste management specialists Veolia signed the 25 year PFI waste management contract - which targets an ambitious 50% recycling rate for the inner London borough by 2021 - with Southwark in February. Woolf was commissioned to support Veolia through the PFI procurement process from the start of the tender stage, providing advice and programming of the waste infrastructure and construction works. Woolf continues to provide support to the project through the mobilisation period and the lengthy planning and construction phases to ensure the project runs to schedule. Southwark Council secured PFI funding of around £35m for the project which includes the collection of municipal solid waste; a new state of the art waste and recycling site on the Old Kent Road incorporating a municipal depot, Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), Household Waste Recycling and Recovery Centre (HWRRC) and Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plant. Waste-derived fuel from the MBT process will initially be sent to the South East London Combined Heat and Power Facility (SELCHP) for use as clean burning fuel. The site will also include an education centre as part of an innovative partnership with London Remade that emphasises working closely with residents and schools to promote the reduction, re-use, recycling and recovery of materials.
